The different types of digital camcorder
There are three main types of digital camcorder and it is generally the say that
they store the video that separates them:
| DV Camcorders DV camcorders offer digital recording with a great quality of picture and sound and record onto small tapes. DV camcorders can be connected to televisions and computers for viewing and editing and are small and lightweight. DVD Camcorders DVD record directly onto blank DVD discs such as DVD–R, DVD–RW and DVD–RAM and offer top quality digital recording. Scenes that are recorded are accessed just like chapters on a standard DVD and the DVD camcorders can be connected to computers for easy editing with the recorded DVD discs being able to be played in any DVD player or computer. HDD Camcorders HDD camcorders have an internal hard disc drive (HDD) that they record onto so there are no tapes or DVD's. The HDD camcorders offer top quality digital recording and the amount that you can record depends on the size of the HDD and the quality that you are recording in. You can easily transfer your recordings onto DVD using a computer or DVD recorder or transfer the recordings onto your computer for editing. |
| Image Stabiliser An image stabiliser keeps the image steady no matter what shakes and shudders are affecting your filming and so greatly increase the quality of the recording. Zoom There are two types of zoom that digital camcorders use and they are optical and digital zoom. The optical zoom is the 'proper' zoom as it moves the lens to achieve the zoom, the digital zoom however artificially creates the zoom using computer software to enlarge the image. With optical zoom the image stays crystal clear and of a very high quality but the digital zoom can disturb the quality so if zoom is important to you then you should buy a digital camcorder with a large optical zoom. LCD Screen Most of the quality digital camcorders have an LCD screen and they are very useful indeed. They allow you to record without having to look through the viewfinder which can be much easier and less tiring and they also often display options on the LCD screen too, you can also watch your recordings on the spot on the LCD screen which makes things much more convenient. Photo Mode Photo mode allows you to use the digital camcorder as a digital camera and take digital photos. The quality of the digital photos is measured in megapixels and the more megapixels the camcorder is capable of the better the quality of the digital photos. Programme AE modes These AE modes offer filming modes that are designed to be used in specific circumstances such as dark, landscape, portrait, sunset and sports and have settings such as shutter speed, exposure and focus set to be ideal in those conditions. |
