Welcome to the Digital Camcorders with 3CCD page, a CCD (Charge Coupled
Device) is a semiconductor image sensor that digital camcorders use to sense
the light information from the lens and create the picture.
The CCD measures the amount of light and the colours and with this information
can make up the picture, it only has to sense the primary colours (red, green
and blue) as the rest of the colours can be made from these. With a 3CCD digital
camcorder the camcorder has 3 CCDs though and has a CCD for each primary colour
which makes the image have a much better quality of picture.
3CCD camcorders are more expensive though as they cost more to make and so they
are usually used by professional digital camcorder users. There are some 3CCD
digital camcorders for home use though and the quality is very good indeed but
they are not as cheap as the single CCD digital camcorders.
