Welcome to the Digital Camcorders with Zoom page, the zoom is a great feature
of digital camcorders that allows you to zoom in on the action while you
are filming.
With zoom there are two important aspects that need to be considered and they
are the strength of the zoom and the type of the zoom. The strength is measured
in the amount of times that the image is magnified so for example if the zoom
doubled the size of the image it would be stated as 2x. Most digital camcorders
have much more powerful levels of zoom though with 20x and higher being common
and this means that you can film distant objects or very small objects easily.
The type of zoom is also very important and the 'proper' zoom is the optical
zoom in that it achieves the zoom by moving the lens. With optical zoom the image
remains crystal clear and so there is no loss in quality so when you buy a digital
camcorder you should ensure that it has a high optical zoom rating if you like
to zoom while you are filming.
There is also a digital zoom and most digital camcorders have this but it is
not as good as the optical zoom. It is created by simply using computer software
to enlarge the image and so there is some quality loss, the digital zoom is usually
much higher than the optical zoom but is does not offer the same quality. The
digital zoom can look good though if the camcorder has a very high resolution
and you are not zooming much, it can also take over from the optical zoom when
this has reached it's limit and so digital zoom can be useful at times.
For people who wish to buy a digital camcorder with a zoom we have listed lots on this page that have an optical zoom and many of them will also have a digital zoom. They are listed with the cheapest first too so it is easy to find a cheap digital camcorder that has an optical zoom using this page.
